Ultrasound

What is Ultrasound Imaging?

Gynecologic ultrasound imaging, also called sonography or ultrasound scanning, works by using sound waves to generate pictures of the female reproductive organs, typically your uterus, cervix, bladder, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Ultrasounds allow your doctor to investigate what may be at the root of your symptoms or discomfort, so that they can more accurately diagnose and treat the issue. Ultrasounds are also used routinely during your pregnancy to monitor the growth and development of your baby.

A small probe (called a transducer) is used to transmit high-frequency sound waves through the probe and into the body. The transducer gathers the sounds that are bounced back, and a computer translates those sounds into images. Ultrasound images are captured in real time, so they can show movement of the organs and structures, as well as blood flow through your vessels. Ultrasound imaging is completely safe, uses no radiation, and is an excellent way for our doctors to understand what may be causing your symptoms so that we can ensure that you receive the correct diagnosis and effective treatment.

Uses for Ultrasound Imaging

Pelvic ultrasound imaging is a safe, minimally invasive way to examine and diagnose problems in the organs and structures of your pelvis and lower abdomen. At Southern OBGYN, we use three types of ultrasounds: transabdominal, transvaginal and Doppler.

A transabdominal ultrasound is done on your abdomen, and a special gel is put on the transducer to help it move more smoothly and to prevent air from getting in between your skin and the probe. The transducer is run back and forth over the surface of your abdomen, and the sound waves are sent to the computer to translate into images.

Transvaginal ultrasounds are a bit more invasive, as it requires the transducer to be inserted into the vagina. Gel is also used during this procedure, and while you may experience some mild pressure, it is temporary and usually less uncomfortable than a Pap test.

Doppler ultrasounds can measure the speed of the blood flow through the arteries and veins of your pelvic area, and are used to find blockages or narrowing of the blood vessels.

What do Gynecologic Ultrasounds Diagnose?

Ultrasound examinations can help diagnose the cause of gynecologic symptoms experienced by women such as pelvic pain and abnormal vaginal bleeding, as well as identifying other issues, including:

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometrial polyps
  • Uterine scarring
  • Structural anomalies of the uterus or ovaries
  • Abnormalities of the uterus, ovaries or bladder

Once the ultrasound is complete, your physician reviews the images and will explain your diagnosis and discuss treatment options with you.

At Southern OBGYN, we also have the capability to offer 3D and 4D pelvic ultrasounds to help diagnose and monitor issues in the female reproductive system, including congenital uterine abnormalities, the location of polyps, fibroids or tumors, and other problems that are difficult to detect with normal 2D ultrasonography.

Obstetric Ultrasounds

Obstetric ultrasounds are used to monitor your pregnancy from beginning to end. Some of the things it can do include:

  • Estimating the age of the pregnancy
  • Establishing the presence of a fetus
  • Determining if you are pregnant with multiples
  • Determining the position of the fetus and the placenta
  • Monitoring fetal growth and development
  • Detecting and diagnosing congenital abnormalities
  • Determining how much amniotic fluid is surrounding the baby
  • Monitoring the cervix for shortening or opening
  • Determining the sex of the baby

Transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasound are the most commonly used methods, though a Doppler ultrasound may be combined as well to evaluate how well blood is flowing through the umbilical cord, placenta and fetus.

We also offer 3D and 4D ultrasounds to provide more in-depth diagnostics of your pregnancy.
